How to Tell If You're Really Supporting a Handmade Artist on Etsy

Etsy was originally created to give artists, makers, and craftspeople a place to share their work with the world. A marketplace built on the idea that the things we surround ourselves with should come from real people, made with real hands, and sold with real intention.
And for a long time, that's exactly what it was. There are still thousands of incredible small businesses on Etsy today. Artists quietly working from their studios, kitchen tables, and spare bedrooms, pouring themselves into every order. But the platform has also grown enormously, and with that growth has come a lot of noise. Today many listings are fulfilled through manufacturers or dropshipping companies, and it can be genuinely difficult for shoppers to tell the difference between a handmade item and one that was mass produced overseas and simply listed as handmade. As a small artist myself, I think about this a lot. Because every time someone chooses a dropshipped listing over a genuine handmade shop, a real person loses an order that could have helped them pay their bills, keep their dream alive, or donate to a cause they care about.

What to Look For Before You Buy
Check the estimated shipping time
This is one of the fastest clues. If an item is advertised as handmade but ships in 3 to 6 weeks, ask yourself why. Genuine handmade artists typically turn orders around within a week or two. Long shipping windows often indicate the item is coming from an overseas manufacturer, not a person sitting at a desk creating your order by hand.
Look at where the item ships from
Etsy shows you the ship-from location on every listing. If a shop claims to be a small American artist but ships from China or Eastern Europe, that's worth paying attention to.
Read the shop's About section
Genuine artists almost always have a personal story in their About section. They'll tell you why they started, who they are, and what drives them. If the About section feels generic, vague, or like it could belong to any shop, that's a signal.
Browse the customer photos
Real customers leave real photos. Look through the reviews and see if the photos match the listing images or if they look like the same stock images you see across multiple shops. Authentic customer photos are one of the most honest indicators that a shop is the real deal.
See if the seller shares their process
Does the shop have social media links? Do they show behind the scenes content, works in progress, or their actual workspace? Artists who make things by hand are usually proud of their process and love to share it. If a shop has no social presence and no evidence of a creative process, dig a little deeper before purchasing.
