At Home Euthanasia for Pets: A Choice I Made For My Dog

Updated: Feb 12

It's never easy to say goodbye to a loyal companion who has been by your side for years. One of the toughest decisions a pet owner can make is deciding when it's time to let go. As pet parents, we never get enough time with our furry family members.

In my childhood, our family dogs were taken to the veterinary office when they passed away. However, with our last family dog, my dad decided to have him put down in the comfort of our home. So, when the time came for my beloved Moxey, I knew I wanted to do the same. Moxey was terrified of going to the vet, and the last thing I wanted was for her to be in a stressful state as she left this world.

As the inevitable approached, I made sure to have a plan in place. I had already chosen a veterinarian who was available 24/7, as I did not know if I would be able to plan in advance or if Moxey would need a veterinarian in the middle of the night.

Fortunately, I had a plan because the night came unexpectedly, and at 1 am, Dr. Leticia Gonzalez from Gemcore Veterinary Services arrived with a bouquet of flowers, ready to assist Moxey. The whole process was treated with compassion and empathy.

If you are familiar with my story, then you know I started my custom pet art around the loss of Moxey. Losing her was heartbreaking, but being able to say my final goodbye in the comfort of my own home was made possible by Dr. Gonzalez and I am forever grateful for her services.

Having a Contact List:

Being prepared with an at-home euthanasia contact list can provide invaluable support and guidance during a difficult and emotionally charged time. This comprehensive resource offers a lifeline for individuals and families facing the heart-wrenching decision of euthanizing a beloved pet in the comfort of their own home. The contact list should include vet professionals who specialize in compassionate end-of-life care, ensuring that the process is handled with utmost empathy and dignity. By having access to this list, individuals can easily connect with experienced veterinarians who understand the sensitive nature of euthanasia and can provide personalized care tailored to the unique needs of each pet and their family. This resource not only simplifies the logistics of arranging at-home euthanasia but also offers peace of mind, knowing that professional assistance is just a phone call away during this challenging time.

Here are 6 tips when choosing an at-home euthanasia service:

  1. Read as many reviews as you can. This helps give you an idea of how others liked or disliked their services.

  2. Call the Veterinary in advance to become familiar with them and their staff.

  3. Give someone close to you, their contact information (see above). When the time came, I already sent Gemcore Veterinary Services contact information to my boyfriend and he was the one who placed the call on my behalf of me.

  4. Ask to see if the provider you select does 24/7 house calls. Not many veterinary services offered this at the time.

  5. Find out about after-life care and if they provide cremation services.

  6. Last but not least, if you were happy with their service, remember to refer your friends and family.
